Long Beach Expo - Feb 2009

Our First Show As A Team!

Armen and I had a great first show together.  We listened to a lot of dealers and collectors and learned about their online buying and selling habits.  We're still compiling results, but here are some clear patterns we have observed:
  • Collectors and Dealers want to have relationships with the people they do business with...buying and selling coins is not an "anonymous commodity" business.
  • eBay sellers resent being strong-armed into using PayPal.  The Dealers we spoke to said that for the most part, people are trustworthy.  They're happy to take checks and actually prefer them in many cases.
  • eBay sellers also feel that fees have become too high - especially when a reserve price is set.
  • eBay has also become a bit anti-seller, not hearing out their half of the story and investigating before withholding payments or investigating potential buyer fraud.
  • Less than half of collectors and dealers keep a complete list of inventory in either electronic or paper form.  Why not? It can be more work than it is worth, it is hard to keep up-to-date as transactions occur, they're not computer people...
  • Of those that do keep a list, the majority use Microsoft Excel.

Where do you find the coins you want?

When there's that one or two coins you need to complete your collection - or when it's time to upgrade, where do you look?

eBay have it most of the time?
Hitting the local coin shops?
Good on-line coin shops?

It seems like there are an awful lot of places to search...is this fun or a grind?

Let me know what you think.
